Simply Having an Annoying Christmastime

•

You may or may not know this, but I LOVE Christmas. Love. And Christmas music. I could and do joyfully listen to Christmas music for six weeks straight every year and never get sick of it.

There are very few Christmas songs that I dislike. (I don’t even hate that Mariah Carey one everyone else hates. I actually love that one!) Offhand, I can think of four (but I’m sure there are a few others). There’s “Wonderful Christmastime”, which feels like blasphemy to say, being such a huge Beatles fan, but that artificial synth-iness is sooo obnoxious. There’s the Charlie Brown one where all the kids go, “REEEE REE REEEEE REE REEEEEEE” off-key over and over. There’s the one where that country guy (Gene Autry, maybe?) goes, “Thowmpety thowmp thowmp, thowmpety thowmp thowmp”–despise that. And there’s the one where Michael Jackson sees Mommy kissing Santa Claus, because every time I listen to it, I detest more and more the gleefulness of a child hoping Daddy catches Mommy with Santa and their marriage falls apart. (Is this kid sadistic? Or is he just too stupid to understand what’s going to happen when Daddy finds out about the affair? Why on earth does he think it will be funny!?) Those are probably the Four Horsemen of Christmas songs I hate.

In the roughly two hours of commute time I have spent listening to Christmas music so far this season, I have already heard “Wonderful Christmastime” FOUR TIMES!!!

Also, while it isn’t one of my favorites (of which there are MANY), I don’t hate “This Christmas”. However, this morning on the way to work, after Christina Aguilera finished regaling me with blazing fireplaces and carols through the night, WEJZ paused for a second to inform me that it was Jacksonville’s official Christmas music station before immediately putting Donny Hathaway on to sing me the exact same song. Later, when I got back in my car, the very first song playing was, once again, Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas”.

Again, this is all in only two hours of radio time, much of which was also taken up by commercials. I also heard “Feliz Navidad” twice today.

I’m just saying…I get it. I get why people get annoyed with it sometimes.

Anyway, happy Thanksgiving!

ETA: Now up to five times in three hours of commute time.
