I’ve got something to admit that I’m a little embarrassed about. I had never seen Die Hard before a year or so ago, and without having seen it, I was ready to die hard on the hill that it was absolutely not a Christmas movie! Then I watched it, and loved it, and the rest of the series, as well. And my mind was not changed.
But then the other day, I caught just the tail end of it, where McClane and Powell see each other for the first time, and McClane introduces his wife…and I was absolutely overcome by the Spirit of Christmas, or at least the Spirit of Powell. And I started thinking, ‘Well…it is set at Christmas…and there is a bit of Christmas music here and there….’
And I have to say, I think I’ve finally been converted. I’d probably need to sit through the whole movie again before I can fully commit, but at this point I think I’d have to say that Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
ETA: I think I need a full re-watch before I really commit to this side. I walked in at the one really Christmas Spirit-y moment, and friends are making a pretty good case that it is not a Christmas movie, just a movie set at Christmastime, because you could remove Christmas from the movie and it wouldn’t change at all.
