The West Germany Match

•

Our free Pluto app started playing soccer while I was preoccupied with a project. Husband said, “Look, it’s the Federal Republic of Germany! ‘F-R-G.’”

“Mm-hmm,” I said, glancing up just long enough to register that they apparently wear very short shorts in the Federal Republic of Germany, but this did not really surprise me at all, and I went back to my work.

Later, I was lost in thought and staring off into space mid-project and noticed the brand names around the field looked off, like old versions of themselves, and thought this was odd, too, almost dreamlike, but must just be how they do things in Germany, and anyway, my work wasn’t going to do itself.

Then I spotted a logo I hadn’t seen in an incredibly long time–for RVA VHS–and was finally brought out of my stupor. “Hang on! I thought the short shorts and the logos were a little odd, but now I KNOW something’s not right!” I said.

“Oh?” said Husband. “Did West Germany not tip you off? The ‘Federal Republic of Germany’?”

“Well, maybe that’s just the full name of Germany and I’d never heard it before!”

“West Germany doesn’t exist anymore!”

“Germany has a western region!”

Anyway, this is how I learned, at this stage of my life, that apparently the TV sometimes plays whole sports games from years and years ago and not just live and replays from the past 24 hours.
