So you’d like to have a Harry Potter-themed wedding. But you live in the US, and Universal Studios won’t rent Hogwarts out to you, and Brian Thompson’s bedroom can’t accommodate your whole wedding party. Never fear–the University Club of Chicago has you covered!
The University Club, founded in 1887, is a stunning venue both inside and out. Located on East Monroe Street right in the center of Chicago, it’s a beautiful work of Gothic architecture that overlooks Lake Michigan and Millennium Park. Many other landmarks are nearby, some only steps away.
The groom had not seen the venue before the wedding day. During the reception, he shared that the bride had told him she was planning someplace special for the wedding. “I didn’t know she meant Hogwarts!” he quipped.
The Great Hall
It’s easy to see how someone might look at this building–designed by university grads who wanted to share their love of literature and the arts–and be reminded of a magical castle. Just take a peek at the Great Hall–er, that is, the Cathedral Hall!
The Library
Check out this amazing library, where guests can actually borrow the books!
The Common Room
And look at this cozy common area in the main lobby!
The Grand Staircase
There’s even an impressive grand staircase. I should have taken more pictures of it because I loved it so much. We avoided the elevators at all costs!
The Living Room
We enjoyed beverages in the Living Room, with its dreamy view of the full moon over Lake Michigan.
Dress Code
There are several different dress codes, depending on which part of the hotel you’re in and what day of the week it is. I packed for the weekend as though I was going away for the week!
And I just have to share this story from the father of the bride, because it had me in happy tears for people I’d never even met! He told us about the time his daughter, as a young child, gave him a key and told him it was the key to her heart. The father then produced this key that he’d kept all these years and gave it to the groom. That’s when I turned into a leaky faucet! Alohomora, am I right?

Have you been inside similar “castles” within the United States? I’d love to hear about them!
