This is a continuation of a previous post about a gag gift I created last year and the delightful sounds that accompanied it.
If you’ve been following thus far, you’ll know that I have 240 minutes’ worth of Christmas songs that I love just a little bit more than the rest. As we generally wish one another a merry Christmas, I thought it fitting to call this last bit “Part 3: Merriment”. You’ll find that most of the songs on this disc generally fit that theme–the kind of thing you’d play at a Christmas party, or some sort of celebration.
1. Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly – Ray Conniff & the Singers
Ever since I was a kid, I have always loved the guy who says, “Girrrrrllls, I’m under the mistletoe!” Makes me laugh every time.
2. The World That She Sees – Trans-Siberian Orchestra
I just love this guy’s wonderful voice. It took me a ridiculously long time to track down who he is (his name is Jody Ashworth), and unfortunately, I can’t really turn up any other recordings he’s been involved in that I can listen to.
3. The Stowaway – Yamit Mamo
Yes, it’s a song from Doctor Who, but you wouldn’t know that if you hadn’t watched it. It just sounds like any other Christmas song.
4. Christmas is All Around – Billy Mack
If, like me, you were frustrated at never hearing the song in its entirety during the movie, you’ll be pleased to know that this is available on the Love Actually soundtrack.
5. Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing – Christopher Lee
This is just plain awesomeness in a Christmas song.
6. Someday at Christmas – Stevie Wonder
You just have to kind of love the idealism in this one.
7. Happy Christmas (War is Over) – John Lennon
I love this all apart from the screeching children’s choir in the background. (Or is that Yoko? I’m unsure.) That part is…not pleasant.
8. That’s What I Want for Christmas – Nancy Wilson
I was really torn between this and the SheDAISY version. Both are good.
9. We Need a Little Christmas – Percy Faith
10. Trim Up the Tree – How the Grinch Stole Christmas
11. Little Saint Nick – The Beach Boys
12. A Joyful Noise – Jo Dee Messina
It’s unconventional, I know. I know few others who have even probably heard this song, but give it a listen.
13. A Holly Jolly Christmas – Burl Ives
14. A Christmas Holiday – Andy Williams
15. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee
16. Jingle Bell Rock – Bobby Helms
17. Warm & Fuzzy – Billy Gilman
Probably kind of cheesy, but I listened to the heck out of this album when it came out! “It’s the warm and fuzzy time of year” perfectly describes how I feel about everything from September to February, at least in other parts of the world that aren’t Florida. Here in Florida, I rely heavily on music, delicious treats, colored lights, and yummy scents to pretend.
18. All I Want for Christmas is You – Olivia Olson
Everyone will probably hate me for this, but when Love Actually came out, I still hadn’t heard the Mariah version of this song, and when this girl opened her mouth, I was in shock at the voice that came out of it. I have no idea what she’s doing today, but I hope she’s still singing!
19. Run Rudolph Run – Chuck Berry
20. Hey Santa! – Carnie & Wendy Wilson
I imagine I’ll probably get some hate for this, too, but I do enjoy a few of these newer, pop-y Christmas songs to go with my traditional ones.
21. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – Perry Como
22. Silver Bells – Atlantic Starr
I’m unable to find it, but growing up, we had a Sesame Street album on cassette where all the characters sang different songs. I can’t remember much about that album other than the fact that Bert & Ernie did this one, and it made me laugh every time. Wish I could hear it again, but this pretty version will have to suffice.
23. Santa Baby – Madonna
I mean, obviously, Eartha Kitt’s version is the definitive version, but the moment I heard this, I knew it was my version.
And this concludes my 3-part gag gift! In case you missed them, here are Part 1 and Part 2.
