20 Snacks to Try from Turkey

I’m a fairly adventurous eater, so when I learned there was a subscription service that would send you a box of snacks from different countries every month, I had to try it out! Universal Yums offers three subscription sizes, and I got the biggest one, which is $41/month, but absolutely loaded with different kinds of snacks.

Here’s what came in our Universal Yums box from Turkey!

What’s in the Box

Vanilla Tahini Halva by Tatsoi: It turns out we both hate halva, or at least this particular one. Neither the flavor nor the texture appealed to us and we didn’t even finish the sample before throwing it out.

Cocoa Cream Mosaic Cookies by Lush: These weren’t bad, but I didn’t find the flavor very memorable. They were pretty, though.

Baharat Spice Cracker Chips by Ulker Krispi: The flavor was really good and unlike anything else I’ve had before! I’m not sure how I feel about the concept of a cracker chip, though, and my guy wasn’t really into it at all.

Salted Roasted Chickpeas by Otto Nuts: I loved these! The flavor, the texture, everything was great and unique from anything I’ve tried before!

Coconut & Coffee Snowball Cake by Today: I can’t have caffeine, so I skipped this one, but he liked it.

Turkish Sour Watermelon Gummies by Bebeto: These were delicious! If I ate candy more often, I could see these being a favorite. I liked the cute watermelon coloring, too.

Mastic Toffees by Toffix: I’d never had this flavor before and found it very unusual and pleasant, though I’m not a big fan of chewy candy. But I’m glad I got to find out what mastic tastes like! And it was fun learning a bit about the flavor from the book that comes with the box, too.

Melon & Lime Chews by Toffix: They were actually melon & lemon flavored. They tasted good, and it was cool to find something melon-flavored, but again, I’m not big on chewy candy, so I only ate one and gave away the rest.

Toasted Paprika Corn Nuts by List Nuts: I can’t gush about these enough! These were so, so good! Definitely one of my favorite things from the box!

Date Ma’amoul Cookies by Delites: These were just like Fig Newtons, but with dates, and I loved them!

Ice Cream Gummies by Bebeto: This was another we threw out without finishing. Neither of us are a fan of vanilla-flavored gummies.

Honey Mustard & Onion Rice Cakes by Pop Out: We gave these away, too, because we don’t like sweet and savory combined (no honey mustard in this house!).

Orange & Cocoa Cookies by Torku: Another favorite! I loved everything about these–the cookie itself, the custard topping, and the flavor combo.

Baharat Spice Crackers by Torku: These taste really good, but unfortunately came all crumbled to bits. Love that flavor, though!

Roasted Hazelnut Biscuits by Torku: These were one of my favorites, and even more delicious dipped in milk!

Sesame Brittle Bar by Tatsan: I wasn’t sure if I would like this one or not. I couldn’t tell whether it would be sweet or not until I bit into it. Turns out, it tasted exactly like sesame seeds, with maybe some honey mixed in, and I loved it!

Peach Ring Gummies by Bebeto: Enjoyed these as much as the sour watermelon ones, and I’d definitely want them more often if I was more of a candy person.

Cheese & Onion Crackers by Ulker Krispi: We were not fans. Once again, we didn’t care for the chip/cracker thing, and I have always had an aversion to cheese-flavored things.

Almond Kurabiyesi Cookies by Salih Usta: These were very good, but I have a family recipe for similar cookies that I prefer, so I probably wouldn’t buy them again for that reason. But I still very much enjoyed eating them!

Orange & Cocoa Cream Wafers by Torku: Again, loved that orange and cocoa flavor like in the cookies above. I liked how low-calorie these were while still tasting delicious!

My Personal Box

I was glad the snacks all came with enough to share. I was a little disappointed that they weren’t packed with anything to protect them from the Florida heat–especially since several of the items said they should be kept out of the heat–and that many of them, like the crackers, came all crumbled, but I’m also not surprised by that last part since the snacks have traveled a long way to get to us.

Based on this (and not taking into account any nutritional info, which I chose not to pay much attention to for this), if I were to recreate a smaller Turkey box just for me, I would include 9/20 items:

  • Salted Roasted Chickpeas
  • Toasted Paprika Corn Nuts
  • Date Ma’Amoul Cookies
  • Orange & Cocoa Cookies
  • Baharat Spice Crackers
  • Roasted Hazelnut Biscuits
  • Sesame Brittle Bar
  • Almond Kurabiyesi Cookies
  • Orange & Cocoa Cream Wafers
